Reasons to work with SDG 12

We are currently exceeding our global resource capacity at an alarming rate. Earth overshoot day comes earlier each year, and predictions follow this pattern as more and more people move from poverty into the middle class.

An urgent reduction of our ecological footprint is needed, to obtain sustainable development. In this, changing production and consumption methods are essential.

A major consumer freshwater is the agricultural industry with water usage and irrigation now consuming almost 70 percent of all freshwater for human use.

How are 2030 Builders addressing SDG 12?

Decoupling economic growth from natural resource use is fundamental to sustainable development.

Efficient management of natural resources is key. As is the correct disposal of toxic waste and pollutants.

By focusing on the food sector, halve the per capita food waste at the retail and consumer levels by 2030, while also reducing food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.

Work towards independence on fossil fuels, by encouraging, new technologies, and removing inefficient fossil-fuel subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption.

Global action is needed to secure a reduced carbon footprint.

How are companies working with it:

Maersk Line – Lowering CO2-emissions: Maersk Line, the world’s largest container shipping company, set an ambitious reduction target of 60% less CO2 emitted per container moved by 2020, measured against a 2007 baseline. Combined with an expected increase in container volume of 80% by 2020, this target will result in approximately 200 million tons less CO2 emitted from 2007 to 2020. By the end of 2015, Maersk Line had reduced emissions by 42% per container

BYD –Electrical busses in China: BYD ebus, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, offers a city bus with no tailpipe emissions and very low noise levels. The bus is powered by lithium iron phosphate batteries and has a range of 250 km on a single charge in urban conditions. It can recharge in five hours and chemical materials contained in the battery can be safely recycled.

AstraZeneca – Switching from air distributing to sea: AstraZeneca’s Sweden operations completed an ambitious Air2Sea project in 2015 that established sea freight distribution networks to 13 countries. Switching to the transport of goods by sea achieves a massive 97% CO2 saving compared with air transport. The project, which accounted for 80% of local exports, supported the company’s overall goods transport emissions reduction of 7% in 2015
