What is the purpose of SDG 8?
To achieve full and productive employment, decent work and economic growth, for all women and men by 2030.
Reasons to work with SDG 8:
The growth rate for employment is slowing. With widening inequalities and not enough jobs to keep up with a growing labour force. For instance, in 2015, more than 204 million people were unemployed. As of 2017, there were around 300 million workers in extreme poverty, living on less than US$1.90 per day.
How is 2030 Builders addressing SDG 8?
2030 Builders is addressing SDG8 by encouraging entrepreneurship and job creations. We need to focus on creating good working opportunities for all people, help them to succeed in finding decent work opportunities and economic growth.
Effective measures to eradicate forced labor, slavery, and human trafficking need to be enforced.
Protecting labor rights and promoting a safe and secure working environment for all workers, including migrant workers is crucial. And those in precarious employment, are ways to secure this goal.
How are companies working on it?
GSK – Promoting local R&D: Promotes local manufacturing in developing countries by using joint ventures and technology transfer arrangements. It aims to build the capabilities of developing countries to research and manufacture vaccines and medicines, therefore, increasing the company’s access to these markets. For instance, in Brazil GSK partners with FioCruz, a leading public health research institution. Sulzer – Implemented a Safe Behavior Program: Program was designed to foster a team-oriented approach to safety. In other words, the Safe Behavior Program focuses on developing safety leadership as well as employee empowerment. The change program aims to anchor safety in Sulzer employees’ habits, as well as to promote a preventive safety culture. And to offer the necessary framework and tools to empower employees on all levels. The core behaviours of the program are observation, intervention, and responsibility. In 2015, the Safe Behavior Program enabled Sulzer to reach an accident frequency rate (AFR) below two cases per million working hours. That is the lowest AFR ever in its history.
